Questions To Ask An Orthodontist Before Getting Braces

We’re so glad that you’ve decided to transform your smile! That’s the first step to living the confident life you’ve always dreamed of.

The next step in your smile transformation is deciding which orthodontist to entrust with your smile, and which type of braces best suits your lifestyle.

This is your guide to getting braces and preparing for your first visit with a list  of orthodontic consultation questions.

Can I ask my dentist for braces?

When you’re ready to begin your orthodontic treatment journey, it’s best to seek out an orthodontist. It’s true that some dentists offer Invisalign; however, dentists are not trained in tooth movement.

Dentists and orthodontists undergo different training. Both orthodontists and dentists must graduate from a four-year dental program, but orthodontists undergo an additional 2 to 3 years of schooling and training to be qualified for moving teeth and jaw bones.

Your dentist can refer you to an orthodontist, but this isn’t necessary. The decision to transform your smile with an experienced orthodontist is entirely up to you!

How to ask for braces

The process of asking for braces is easy! If you’re in Northwest Florida, all you have to do is request a complimentary exam with us. We’ll take care of the rest.

When you show up for your first visit, you’ll be greeted by our friendly team and you’ll get to meet one of our board-certified orthodontists. Your orthodontist will perform a thorough orthodontic exam, including digital x-rays, digital smile impressions, and photos.

You’ll also get a one-on-one consultation to discuss your current smile condition, and explore your treatment options. We’re proud to offer all of this for free! We want you to be comfortable with your decision to start treatment with us. We also don’t want you to feel that you’re risking anything by inquiring about braces.

Getting braces is as simple as scheduling your complimentary consultation with us.

Top Questions to Ask an Orthodontist Before Braces

  1. What type of braces do you offer?

You’ll want to make sure that the orthodontist you choose offers the type of treatment you want. It’s 2023! You shouldn’t be limited to one type of braces

You wouldn’t want to begin the treatment process with an orthodontist who only offers traditional braces if you’re interested in a more advanced type of braces – like InBrace® hidden braces, clear braces or Invisalign® clear aligners.

  1. Should I choose braces or Invisalign?

Braces are better suited for some lifestyles, while clear aligners are better suited for others. An experienced orthodontist will help you weigh your treatment options based on your lifestyle and preferences.

If you aren’t sure whether you can commit to wearing your clear aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day, braces may be best for you. Invisalign can be more convenient than braces, since clear aligners are removable and don’t come with any dietary restrictions. However, they do require your diligence in wearing them as instructed.

  1. Do you have payment plans?

If you’re trying to stay within budget, you’ll want to make sure that the orthodontist you choose offers an affordable payment plan. Does the practice accept your preferred method of payment? Do they accept credit cards? Do they accept dental insurance?

Before getting braces, it’s important that you know the cost of braces, including your out-of-pocket costs, and have a financial option that makes you feel comfortable.

At Fishbein Orthodontics, we offer 0% interest, in-house financing as well as CareCredit financing! We accept dental insurance and will file your insurance claims for you to help you receive the maximum benefit.

  1. How long after my initial consultation do I get braces?

Will you be able to get braces on your initial visit, or will you have to schedule a separate appointment some time in the future to get braces? If you’re inquiring about treatment for your child who’s in school, or you have to take time off of work to attend your first visit, you may want to ensure that your orthodontist offers Same Day Braces

This way, you can be as efficient as possible and leave your very first visit with braces on your teeth, or your Invisalign scans complete! At Fishbein Orthodontics, we are proud to be Same Day Orthodontists for your convenience. When you request your complimentary exam, let us know that you’re interested in Same Day Braces so we can schedule time to place your braces on your first visit.
